Citizens in liberated Mosul district wave white flags

Abu Mohammad said residents greeted the army with flowers to show their appreciation, and immediately he reopened his shop.
The women ululated as residents waved white flags Sunday in celebration of Iraqi forces who drove Islamic State group jihadists from their eastern Mosul neighbourhood of Al-Khadraa.
"We are raising white flags to show the army that we're peaceful," said shopkeeper Abu Mohammad, a man in his 70s, as he stood outside his store.
Iraqi forces launched a major offensive on October 17 to retake Mosul, which is the country's second city and where jihadist supremo Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed a caliphate in 2014.
On Saturday, they drove IS jihadists out of Al-Khadraa after days of fierce fighting.
Abu Mohammad said residents greeted the army with flowers to show their appreciation, and immediately he reopened his shop.
"We are now done" with the jihadists, he said.
But intermittent gunfire and explosions could still be heard in the distance and Iraqi forces say they are still hunting down diehard jihadists who may be hiding in the area.
"There are residents who are cooperating with us," said Lieutenant Nasser al-Ruqabi from the Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS).
He said CTS started working with them Sunday to identify would-be jihadist holdouts and to determine which roads could have been mined by the IS fighters.
But Abu Mohammad is adamant that the situation in Al-Khadraa is under control and that he will not have to flee his home as tens of thousands of Iraqis in the region have in recent weeks.
"We will not leave," he insisted.
A CTS commander, Thaer al-Kenani, said his unit had encouraged residents to hunker down in their homes and raise the white flags for their protection.
"But despite that, the jihadists went inside their homes and inside mosques and used them as hideouts from where they opened fire at us," said Kanani.

'We buried our dead'

With the presence of Iraqi forces in Al-Khadraa, residents have been trying to pick up the pieces of their lives.
Many can be seen cleaning their homes or just walking down the streets, preciously carrying their white flags like a protection shield as if to reassure themselves that everything is back to normal.
Children cooped up for days indoors are also out on the streets and run after a military convoy flashing 'V for victory' signs.
In a house bustling with people, a group of women are crowded in a room talking about their new found freedom after years of living under the brutal rule of the jihadists.
Some like Rima are even planning for the future.
"Yesterday, at 1:00 pm we got rid of them and we were liberated," said Rima who is in her 20s.
"Now I would like to go back to university to continue my studies in Arabic literature," she said.
Her mother, Umm Ahmad Hamdani, interrupts her.
"This is not our house. We live in the building next door, but Daesh (IS) kicked us out, now we are seven families living here," she said.
"We buried our dead in public gardens. Before yesterday we buried three and yesterday two," she added.
Across the street from the house, black plumes of smoke billow into the sky and beyond that a group of residents are walking by, clasping white flags.

'Collaborators arrested'

Umm Akram Juwadiya said she raised a white flag on top of her house two days ago, when the fighting between Iraqi forces and the jihadists intensified.
Since the army entered Al-Khadraa, it has summoned many young men for questioning, including her four sons.
For two-and-a-half-years, Umm Akram and many other mothers endured abuse from the jihadists.
"They used to come almost daily to question my four boys, and now they are being interrogated by the army. I am worried," she said.
But her concern melted and she broke out in tears when she saw the two sons of her neighbour return home after being summoned for questioning by the army.
Umm Akram then rushed outside as a military convoy carrying Lieutenant General Abdul Ghani al-Asadi, a top CTS commander, drove past her house.
"May God make you victorious. Long live Iraq, long live Iraq," she shouts at the soldiers.
Asadi says the residents of Al-Khadraa played a key role in securing the "victory".
"They provided us with information and they helped us. And they also followed the instructions we gave them," he told AFP.
An AFP correspondent on Sunday saw security forces arresting a number of young men.
"They are members of the intelligence unit, and they are arresting people who collaborated with Daesh," Kenani said.

President Buhari jailed me for 18 months in 1984 because I was rich – Anenih

Former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih, has revealed that President Buhari jailed him for 18 months in 1984, for being wealthy.

According to Punch, Anenih said he was sent to prison between March 1984 and August 1985 when Buhari was a military dictator.
Anenih said “The military regime of General Buhari and Tunde Idiagbon threw me into detention for 18 months on the basis of an anonymous petition that as a prominent and wealthy politician and leader of the NPN in Bendel State, the military administrator would not find his footing unless I was removed from the scene.
“I was sent to Kirikiri Prisons where I spent three months before I was transferred to Ikoyi Prisons.”
He also said he did not commit any crime, adding that his offence was that he was a popular and wealthy politician.
Further narrating his ordeal in prison custody, Anenih said “We were transferred to Ikoyi Prisons because of the riot that took place while we were there. The condemned prisoners whose death warrants had earlier been signed by Alhaji Lateef Jakande when he was governor of Lagos State, broke loose on sighting him as one of the detainees.
“They broke out of their cells and headed towards the building where Jakande and the rest of us detainees were kept. As the prisoners were attempting to force the iron door open, mobile police were called in to quell the riot.”
Adding that “Where we were staying, the bucket latrines or toilets had opening to the rooms. These buckets were emptied maybe once a week from behind, and if for any reason the buckets were not emptied once a week as the rule, you lived with the stench.
“At night, cockroaches, rats and lizards passed through these holes housing the bucket latrines into our cells after crawling on the buckets to disturb us. So, you could really not sleep for one hour without getting cockroaches perch on you.”
Anenih made this revelation in Abuja on Sunday, November 27, 2016, during the launch of his book titled: My Life and Nigerian Politics.

He served as the minister of works and housing during former President Olusegun Obasanjo tenure from 1999 to 2002.

Why Donald Trump's wife and son won't be moving into the White House in January

Neither Melania Trump nor son Barron will be moving to the White House when Donald Trump becomes President of the United States in January.
The First Lady traditionally lives in the President’s Residence, in the main building of the White House.
But Donald Trump confirmed yesterday his wife will be staying in New York, at least until the summer.
The pair will remain in Mr Trump’s Fifth Avenue skyscraper, Trump Tower, so that 10-year-old Barron can remain at his local private school.
"The campaign has been difficult for Barron, and she is hoping to keep disruption to a minimum.”
But Mr Trump doesn’t appear concerned about disrupting the lives of his fellow New Yorkers.
He’s made it clear that while he will be moving to Washington DC, he’ll be spending weekends at his gaudy, gold leaf adorned pad in Trump Tower.
That’s likely to cause chaos with locals, with Secret Service agents being forced to set up a security cordon around the building.

It’ll mean disruption for the thousands of buses and cars which drive past the entrance to the skyscraper each day - and also for some of the building’s famous residents.Bruce Willis and Cristiano Ronaldo are among the well known tenants in the building and will potentially face having their communications monitored by the secret service while they’re on the premises.

Katie Price hits back over marriage split rumours AGAIN after 'lashing out at husband Kieran in new interview'

Katie Price has hit back at split rumours for the second time after claiming her husband 'eats s*** all day' and she hasn't fully forgiven him for cheating on her.
The ex-glamour model , who was alleged to have announced the end of her marriage on a boozy night on the town, took to Twitter after The Sunday Times Magazine published comments she made about her relationship with the former stripper, who she hinted had 'let himself go'.
She tweeted this afternoon: "I'm not splitting with my husband!this interview was months ago," along with a link to the article.

The busty businesswoman also appeared to lash out at the father of her two youngest children, Jett and Bunny, claiming that she'll still seek revenge for his infidelities.
Kieran, 29, who in 2014 was exposed by Katie on Twitter for having affairs with two of her closest friends, has yet to fully understand the pain he put her through.
"I have a sting," she confessed.
"I will get my own back, even on Kieran. I always say to him, 'You haven't had your karma yet, but something will happen – you'll see'.
"I want him to go through all that hurt I went through, seeing all those pictures and text messages in The Sun – I wish he could feel the pain that I had, because it's indescribable. He says he's sorry he put me through all that, but I think, 'Nah, you still haven't felt it'. So I want him to suffer just a little bit."She also referred to him as "Farmer Joe" and said he's now "got a one-pack instead of a six-pack".
The interview comes days after Katie, 38, slammed reports she and Kieran were splitting, after a newspaper claimed she'd shouted that her "marriage is over" on a night out.
She took to Twitter to blast the Daily Star – which had reported her alleged comments – and said she was preparing a lawyer's letter.

Zimbabwe's army chief threatens to deal with anti-President protesters

Neither the army, which has anchored President Robert Mugabe's 36-year rule, nor the police force have been paid on time since June.

Zimbabwe's army commander said on Friday that his soldiers will deal with threats from activists using social media to mobilise anti-government protests, the first time the military has commented on the demonstrations.
Lieutenant-General Valerio Sibanda, the Zimbabwe National Army Commander, said in an interview with state-owned The Herald newspaper that social media activism was cyber warfare that the army would deal with.
Neither the army, which has anchored President Robert Mugabe's 36-year rule, nor the police force have been paid on time since June.
Zimbabwe has seen several protests in recent months with unemployment above 80 percent, dollar shortages worsening as commodity prices slumped and as the region suffers its worst drought for 25 years.
The largest anti-government protest in Zimbabwe in the last decade was organised on social media last month, when a strike by #ThisFlag movement shut down businesses.
"As an army, at our institutions of training, we are already training our officers to be able to deal with this new threat we call cyber warfare where weapons - not necessarily guns but basically information and communication technology - are being used to mobilise people to do the wrong things," Sibanda said.
"The major task we are undertaking now is that of training and preparing the army for whatever eventuality."
Generals in Zimbabwe's military are veterans of the 1970s independence war, and while they publicly support Mugabe and his ZANU-PF, they have divided loyalties over who should succeed Mugabe, who is also under pressure from war veteran allies.
National leaders of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) last month said Mugabe was responsible for Zimbabwe's economic problems, in a stinging rebuke that laid bare cracks within the ruling ZANU-PF party.
Mugabe has responded by arresting and firing war veterans leaders from ZANU-PF, but his plan to use a splinter group to elect a new ZNLWVA executive was blocked by the High Court.
A court ruling seen by Reuters on Friday said the splinter war veterans group backing the 92-year-old president should not interfere with the ZNLWVA's operations, but he is expected to persist in his bid to push out his former allies.

Kaduna Government to spend N2.2bn on salaries of newly recruited staff

He said payment would commence on Monday, adding that it would cover the five months salaries owed workers.
The Kaduna State Government said on Friday that N2.2 billion would be paid to 1,200 newly recruited staff of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Andrew Nok, said this in Kaduna while addressing journalists on the activities of the ministry.
He said payment would commence on Monday, adding that it would cover the five months salaries owed workers.
The commissioner said the delay in payment was to ensure that all the newly recruited staff passed through proper documentation to check the "ghost worker syndrome.’’
Nok also pledged that 15 secondary schools would be reactivated as boarding schools and equipped with standard facilities.
He said hostels, library, clinic, kitchen facilities, perimeter fence and potable water would be provided to give the schools a conducive environment for teaching and learning.
The commissioner also said security personnel would be provided to ensure security in the institutions.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 15 schools to be reactivated as boarding institutions included Queen Amina College, Kaduna, Government Girls secondary School , Kawo; Government Technical College, Malali and Barewa Collage, Zaria.
Others included Government College, Kagoro; Girls Science Secondary School , Giwa; Rimi College, Zaria; Girls Science School, Kowai; Government Girls Secondary School , Soba, Government college, Saminaka and Government College, Kagoro.

Banky W's marriage won't be according to Pastor Adeboye's style

The ever progressive Banky W isn't bothered if his wife is able to cook or not despite Pastor Adeboye's now famous advice.

Cooking’ seems to be such an innocent word but put it in the Nigerian societal context and it is a bomb, a raging topic and a controversial subject.

On Monday, August 1, 2016 a video clip of the General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God Pastor E.A Adeboye went viral. In the clip the spiritual head of the RCCG advised the men in his congregation not to marry a women who can’t pray for at least an hour and a woman who can’t cook.

His statement triggered a heated debate on social media especially Twitter for days. While some people saw nothing wrong in his statement about men not marrying women who can’t cook others took offense to it.
Feminists saw his statement as feminist and others thought it was insulting to sum a woman’s wifely qualities just down to her cooking. It would be safe to say that the man of God took some knocks for his marriage advice.

As expected some celebrities put their 2 cents in. Eccentric celebrity Charly Boy said Pastor E.A ‘misyarned’. “Oga pastor, that one na missyarn. Over praying does not make one a better husband or wife, because the world especially Naija is filled with Fake people and “Fakest” pastors. Does a man having a job guarantee that he will make a good husband? Does a woman knowing how to cook guarantee she will make a good wife? Haba” wrote Charly Boy in his article.
Another celebrity who aired out his thoughts on the issue was singer Banky W. During an interview with Ebony Life TV aired on Wednesday, August 7, 2016 Banky W said he is comfortable with a wife who does not know how to cook

I cook. My wife doesn't need to know how to cook. I actually enjoy it” said the EME boss. Anyone who knows Banky W knows that he is a very good cook so having a wife who doesn’t cook won’t be such a big deal for him.
Banky W might not be married yet but he has an idea of the woman he wants to settle with. From his thoughts on marriage and this whole cooking debacle Banky W is progressive and his marriage will not be structured by the conventional family roles.
Whenever Banky W gets married, he surely won’t be bogged down by the traditional values. As for being able to pray for an hour I don’t think Bankole Wellington wants that kind of prayer warrior.

Mbaka Priest criticises Buhari, says Nigerians are suffering [VIDEO]

Mbaka also warned the President to note that if things continue like this, nobody will vote for him in 2019.

Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka has criticised President Buhari over his poor handling of the economic situation in the country.

Mbaka said Nigeria is being robbed by a set of people, whom he said swore that things will never be well with Nigeria.
The Priest also called on Buhari to do away with advisers who are not functioning, adding that Nigerians are suffering.
Mbaka alleged that some people in Nigeria have planned to continue the fraudulent practises of the past.
He said “As the President is fighting corruption, some of us are praying that he should also fight hunger. Hunger is everywhere, it is in the atmosphere.”
Mbaka, who claimed that Nigeria is being attacked ferociously, said Buhari should know that there is trouble in the land.
He also warned the President to note that if things continue like this, nobody will vote for him in 2019.
The Priest also complained that he has not been allowed to speak with Buhari, adding that he does not need the President to survive.
Mbaka, while calling on Buhari to assemble economic experts who will revamp the economy alleged that a lot of people have died as a result of the hardship in the country.
The Priest said “Go to mortuaries, go to mortuaries, there are no spaces. I repeat, myself went to Annunciation Hospital the other time to see my brother, coming in, there was no space, the whole mortuary was filled up and they told me it is the same thing in the Eastern Medical Centre and that if I go to UNTH, there is no space, the death rate is high.”
Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka recently complained that some people are telling President Buhari lies about him.
See video of Mbaka criticising Buhari's government below.

Niger Delta Avengers ‘We have no connection with criminals,’ Militants say

Militant group, Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) also warned the Nigerian Army to stop justifying extra-judicial killings carried out in the fulfilment of its duties.

Militant group, Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) has distanced itself from the criminal activities of other groups in Nigeria.

NDA also warned the Nigerian Army to stop justifying extra-judicial killings carried out in the fulfilment of its duties.
The group made the comments via a statement released by spokesman, Mudoch Agbinibo.
The statement reads:
“The Nigeria press community should not misquote the NDA on our statement on the Nigeria military killing innocent civilians in Arepo, Ogun State.
“The High command of the NDA only bemoaned and condemns the reckless war game that the military is embarking upon with the lives and property of defenceless law abiding citizens in those communities while the criminals have fled the area.
“We should not be linked to activities of criminals and illegal bunkering going on in any part of the country that the Nigeria security agencies are the main benefactors and collaborators.
“The military should not use such contrived video clips to justify their killings and destruction of property of defenceless citizens in Ogun State. That we cannot be intimidated by these video clips of propaganda and drones.
“The press and the general public should not quote us out of context; we only expressed our concern on the bombing by the government. When the criminals have already fled the crime scene.
“Which amount to the death of innocent citizens in Arepo. So the military should stop justification of extra judicial killings. That is our position.”

'Granny', the world's oldest killer whale, is STILL swimming in the Pacific: 105-year-old orca was alive before Titanic sank

  • Granny was sighted with other whales on 27 July in the Salish Sea

  • Scientists have been studying the remarkable cetacean since 1971

  • Officially known as J2, she is the oldest known orca in the world

  • Typically killer whales live to between the age of 60 and 80 in the wild

Born one year before the ill-fated Titanic struck an iceberg, the world's oldest known killer whale has been spotted off the coast of Washington.
Experts spied the 105-year orca nicknamed 'Granny' with other whales on 27 July in the Salish Sea.
Scientists have been studying the remarkable cetacean since 1971 when they estimated she was 60 years old and gave her the official name of J2

Experts have been studying whales in the North Pacific Ocean, called the Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKW) since the early 1970s. Granny, pictured in 2014, is said to be the matriarch of the group and was spotted in the Strait of Georgia at the weekend

HOW DID EXPERTS DETERMINE GRANNY’S AGE?

Researchers began studying the resident orcas in the early 1970s.
At that time they had photos of Ruffles, known as J1, and Granny, taken in 1971.
Their relative size suggests they were both fully grown adults when the photo was taken, meaning they were both at least 20 years old in 1971.
Experts at the time said Ruffles was the younger of the two, and due to their association, suggested Granny was Ruffles’ mother.
If Ruffles was at least 20 in 1971, she would have been born in 1951, and since Granny was not spotted with any more children after this date, the researchers assumed Ruffles was her final calf.
Female killer whales stop producing at around the age of 40, which means if Ruffles was born in 1951, and Granny was 40 at that time, her birth year would be 1911.
Her presence has stunned scientists because killer whales, or orcas, typically live to between the age of 60 and 80 in the wild.
Granny is a matriarch of a group called the Southern Resident Killer Whales in the Pacific Ocean.
Experts from Ocean EcoVentures Whale Watching were able to identify her thanks to a marking on her dorsal fin, as well as as a half-moon-shaped notch.
They said in a blog post: 'J2 and and her family have spent the past few weeks foraging and travelling the Georgia Strait.'
Simon Pidcock, from the company, added: 'Granny has been swimming pretty much non-stop for over 100 years.
'The Southern Residents on average travel about 72 miles in a 24-hour period day in, day out.
'This means in Granny’s lifetime she has swam around the world the equivalent of a 100 times.'
In 2014, Granny was spotted in the Strait of Georgia, when she was thought to have travelled up from California with her pod.
Her return to the area for the first time in years was announced by the Pacific Whale Watch Association (PWWA).

Thirty years ago, US anti-FGM campaigner Assetou Sy refused to cut her daughter. Decades later in New York, another battle began

For those who do not know her, Ban Soon-taek is a quiet first lady, married to the secretary general of the United Nations but rarely vocal on global issues. She showed another side, as a champion of human rights equalling her more famous husband, at a recent event on ending female genital mutilation (FGM).
Her ringing call to “end harmful traditional practices and unleash the power of young girls” came on at an event organised in the margins of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York on 18 April. She thanked participants for endeavouring to “change a harmful tradition into an empowering mission”.
Ban took her inspiration from a meeting organised by the Guardian between her husband and the young British anti-FGM activist Fahma Mohamad two years before in London. She paid tribute to this newspaper’s contributions, expressing hope that the media would continue to “help us spread the message that girls need education, not mutilation”.
As chair of the event, I listened with great interest as Ban spoke about how Fahma was reaching out to address risks to Diaspora communities in developed countries where most people are unaware that FGM is a threat. Her efforts mirror those of my own organisation, Finally Girls Matter, which I founded along with my daughter to protect women and girls of all ages and in all places – including in societies where the practice is largely ignored.

This world is really coming to an end: Police arrest father & son for alleged rape at Illinois State University orientation

A father allegedly put ecstasy in a female student's drink so that his son can rape her. This took place in a residence hall during a two-day event at Illinois State University (the Preview), which is meant for students to find out more about the university before classes start in August. Parents can attend the event but stay on separate floors inside the Hewett residence Hall.

According to a prosecutor, Shawn Childs Jr, and his father, Shawn Childs Sr, were in the hall along with other incoming students when this incident happened. A woman, who has not been named, told authorities Childs Sr put a pill in her soda before she went back to her room feeling ill. His son then followed her inside and raped her twice. This took place between 10 and 11 pm.
The father and son duo have now been arrested. Childs Jr and his father (who had 22 ecstasy pills in his pocket during the arrest) were arrested at a train station, as they were about to head to Chicago.
While Childs Jnr has been charged with four counts of criminal sexual assault, his father, who has faced previous convictions for attempted murder, domestic battery and weapon charges, has been charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.
